The serene town of Nuwara Eliya sits amidst lush tea plantations. The winding roads are lined with tea estates that are quaint and traditional. The weather is moderate, with temperatures ranging from mildly hot to pleasantly cold. Although the town is home to a large Muslim community, it is culturally Sinhalese. Many of the Muslims in town do not own a shoe of footwear, as they are accustomed to wearing dhoti and sandals.
The climate of Nuwara Eliya was already noted for being a temperate locale; however, following independence, the climate was made more moderate. During the first few decades after independence, most of the sugar plantations were located in the south of Nuwara Eliya, and the climate became quite hot and humid in the north. The towns became more like small hamlets, with little commerce and little commercialization. This changed during the early 1990s, when the Sinhalese population movement started moving to the north. This trend drastically improved the economy of the town.
Like many former British colonial cities, Nuwara Eliya experienced a gradual decline in tourism. The towns became little less populated, and there were no more tourists visiting the place. Tourism did not resume in earnest until the late 90s, when the country experienced a period of economic growth. The late 90s also saw the opening up of the diamond trade with Australia and Canada.
The late 90s also witnessed the establishment of the first post-minority school in the entire state. As this trend gained momentum, more people from different backgrounds flocked to the hill country town of Nuwara Eliya. This influx increased the demand for property in the town, making it one of the most lucrative places to invest in India’s Central Province. The diamond boom also spurred many developers into building up residential houses in Nuwara Eliya.
